Have you ever tried hot yoga? That is the kind where the teacher turns the temperature up to 100+ degrees in the room… Well I have, a few times.
In all my experiences with the practice, I have found it to be just the right flow of movement for my taste. It is warm (but I like being a little too warm), yet the poses aren’t typically too difficult, so it feels like good moderate exercise for me- one that I can achieve without over-exerting myself.
Such was NOT the case when I visited Inlet Yoga in Murrells Inlet, SC in July. Wow! It was hot yoga on steroids!
I probably needed the butt kicking that it was, but I must admit, I desperately need to work on my core strength if I want to keep up in there. The teacher, Miss Mimi (who I adore, by the way), turned it up a notch when she added some power moves to the sequence.
Out of breath (and I do mean panting), slipping off my mat, guzzling water all hour, and drenching wet with sweat (I know girls, we are supposed to glisten, but I was more or less drowning)- by the end I found the experience exhilarating still!
The challenge of moving my body in such difficult ways, while continuing to let my breath flow, (and while holding in select curse words) make up a very important lesson to take from the mat to every day life.
In yoga, we can translate the physical positions we are in (poses on the mat) to conditions of life (i.e., sitting in traffic too long, putting up with an aggravating coworker or family member, meeting a deadline). We learn that no matter how difficult, strange or uncomfortable, we keep breathing, stick with it, get back up when we fall down, eventually we move through the pose (and you either achieve it or keep practicing until you do, and then practice some more). Life is quite like this. We face challenges, we get through them- all not always gracefully, we learn lessons, and we repeat the steps.
Thank you, Mimi, for reminding me to get back up, and finding the inner strength to make it all the way through the class, and not give up when the going got tough! Thanks to my friend, Erin, also, who occupied the mat next to me, and together we GLISTENED to the end!
